I have known Alina since I came to Italy. She was a fashion model for print and runway during the 90’s. She was always kind and helpful, especially to the newcomers like myself. To my great surprise, I ran into Alina when I first moved to Lecco. One day when I was in the center of town, I saw a tall brunette strutting down the cobblestoned road in a fringed leather jacket. The fringes swayed in rhythm with her decisive steps. As we met, her face lit up with a big smile. We hugged and I cried, “I don’t believe it! Alina!”

Alina was born and raised in Lecco and she told me “Coming back to Lecco was the right thing for me. I love my city.”

Her Mediterranean beauty was seen in magazines, catalogs and on the runways of Balestra, La Perla, Fendi and Biagiotti, just to name a few. She lived in Milan, Rome and Bologna and traveled the world, working for top brands and companies.

It was five years, or possibly more since I had seen her. After a fashion career, it is normal that paths diverge and new directions lead us towards different lives.

Alina wanted to pursue her love of hairdressing. Her plan was to open a salon where her customers would be pampered and spoiled.

Unfortunately, her plans were disrupted by a devastating car accident. Nearly every bone in her body was broken and she was confined to a wheelchair.  Determined not to let this defeat her, she diligently worked every day on healing and rehabilitation. She says, “It was a very difficult time. It made me realize that we are all hanging on by a thread. Life is so unpredictable.”

After almost nine months, she was able to walk on her own but the strain of having to stand on her feet all day at the hair salon was too physically demanding and she had to abandon her idea.

Having been through months of intense physical therapy, she understands what it means to be physically impaired. Alina volunteers her time (and hairdressing skills) with the elderly, helping at local nursing homes and associations. She explains, “I like making people feel loved and cared for. It makes me feel good, it’s a real pleasure.”

That life-changing accident had changed her perspective on life and how to live it. She wanted a job where making others feel good was the main objective. Alina had never worked in hospitality before but that didn’t stop her from transforming her former residence into a holiday rental.

She is dedicated to her work as host of Casa Vacanze Namaste. “When people come to the house, I want them to feel at home. I want them to feel welcomed and comfortable.”

When choosing a name for the house, she wanted something that would reflect her altruistic spirit. Namaste is a greeting in Sanskrit meaning, “I bow to you”. It is considered the utmost expression of respect and reverence towards another human being.

“Some people told me not to use this name; they said that it was strange. It felt right to me, so I stayed with it.” She said, “I am so happy when people tell me the house has good energy. That’s exactly what I wanted to express.”

For Alina, the new arrival of a guest is fun and not at all work. “I get excited when a guest comes. It’s as if relatives are coming to visit. I go early to the house to set up and make sure everything is ready for them. It is so interesting meeting people from different cultures and countries. I am so grateful, my new life is very enriching,” she says with a big smile. “The one thing I never imagined to get out of this job was the pure joy of making other people feel good.”

The House

The one-bedroom apartment is perfect for a couple, but can also sleep up to five by transforming the living room into a second bedroom. Families are welcome and a baby bed is available for little guests too! The kitchen is spacious and fully equipped. An elevator and an accessible bathroom make the apartment practical for guests needing additional support and security.

Amenities such as free wi-fi, a flat screen tv with satellite channels, a parking garage and a terrace with a view, offer additional comforts.

Although Alina loves animals (she has three cats of her own), there are no pets allowed, nor smoking. “It breaks my heart when guests ask if they can bring pets, but out of respect for my other guests who may have serious allergies, I cannot allow it,” she says.

I personally recommend Casa Namaste. I book it myself anytime a friend or relative comes to visit me in Lecco and they are always comfortable and pleased.
